About Big Machine

Mark Thompson is the creative force behind The Big Machine Studios and has been creating digital art and animation for over 3 decades. In that time, Mark has started and headed 3 studios, served as Art Director on 11 video game titles, and has created amazing visuals for IPs such as Star Trek, Transformers, Beastwars, Robocop, and Discovery Channel. Mark also served as the Chief Creative Officer at Healthimation where he developed highly engaging 3D animation to drive positive behaviors in mobile health users/patients. Additionally, in the past couple years, Mark has directed his talents into experiments in digital illustration. The works are created using a variety of techniques including digital paint, 3D rendering, image processing, compositing, and advanced computational image manipulation and generation tools.

Prior to Mark’s creative endeavors with Big Machine, he was a graphic hardware architect, designing custom computer chips and systems before Nvidia and AMD GPUs existed. Leading a team of 5 engineers, he developed the graphics engine to be used in the F-22 Raptor. He was also an early pioneer in the fields of computer vision, robotics, and motion capture.

This site is dedicated to my father, Frank Thompson, who worked tirelessly to survive as a freelance artist. He inspired me, taught me, and tried to disuade me from a career that gave him so much financial heartache.
